Malltopia Isn’t For the Elderly

Old people just somehow don’t fit in here in China. This is due largely to the fact that it's probable most of them grew up in an environment vastly different than the concrete metropolis of malls and megaplexes—hypermodernity. My suspicions were confirmed upon a trip to rural China; some elders have even reverse-migrated back to their hometowns. 

The metropolitan areas have been usurped by the young and yet the old are still held in high-esteem in Chinese culture. Watching an old Buddhist monk trying to use a smartphone the other day was somehow sort of sad. Below are some pictures that touch on this odd liminal demographic that just somehow seems lost…. more to come in the series.
